Converter
Breed Mate allows you to share your data
freely because it supports a number of common data exchange formats. For example
you can export or import your entire
database to Excel, Word, Access or any other database or spreadsheet using standard
copy and paste or the CSV file format.
We believe that if it's your data and you put it into the
program you should have every right to recover that data. We also strongly believe
that the free interchange of data will benefit all responsible breeders. Unfortunately
most other pedigree programs don't share data as freely as Breed Mate which is why
we developed the Universal Pedigree Converter (UPC).
This is a fully functioning freeware program and it was developed at the
request of our customers to convert their pedigree program data to Breed Mate.
FLASH NEWS: UPC 4.2.0 now has an Alfirin DBW file viewer and an Alfirin
re-indexer which makes data mining more difficult . 4.2.2 now has a PedPoint file
importer.
|
UPC will allow you to convert data from many other pedigree
programs into Breed Mate format. Formats include Cat Breeders Assistant (V1 and
V2), CatTrax, Pedigree, Lineage Manager, Ped Plus, GenTree, BellCats, Compuped (V3
and V4) and Pedigree (Charles Orange). Note these products are not affiliated with
Wild Systems in any way. The UPC is a 32bit program hence it will only run on Win95/98/2000/NT.
The only condition we place on the use of the UPC is that you
have a legal right to convert that data.
We provide two links, the first is to our older
V3.5 converter which provides more conversions to some older pedigree formats which
are no longer supported by our newer V4.0 converter. The V4.0 converter is the one
to use if converting Compuped or CatTrax files or any other file listed below.
Download UPC V3.5 (older
version but converts more file formats)
Download UPC V4.2.2
(has newer Compuped4 conversion)
UPC also provides conversion to OPSX format. Here is a
link to the latest V5 specification
of the OPSX format.
Instructions
To convert a file simply run the UPC4.EXE program by double
clicking on it.
Next select the appropriate convert command from the File menu, eg to convert
Compuped select "Import Compuped...".
A file open dialog box will appear. Navigate through your
file system and select
the file you wish to convert. The file that needs to be converted is not always
obvious as many programs use multiple files to store data. The file type to look
for will be listed in the dialog box.
The following pedigree formats, are currently supported.
The table lists the files from which data can
be extracted and the data fields available.

File Types
|
CatTrax
|
*New* We have just added a conversion
for this. It directly reads the Access MDB file. (You need the V4.0 converter) |
|
Ped Plus
- |
File extension is ".DBF". The data which
can be extracted is name, sire, dam and registration,
sex, date of birth, title, pet name |
|
Myron Arthur |
File extension is ".0". The data which
can be extracted is name, sire, dam and registration,
sex. |
|
CBA (Cat Breeders Assistant)
|
File extension is ".REC". The data which
can be extracted is name, sire, dam and registration,
title, colour, breeder, owner, breed. |
|
Compuped (Version 3) |
File extension is ".PRC" but Converter also reads ".PMS"
file to get title information. The data which
can be extracted is name, sire, dam and registration,
sex, date of birth, colour, title. |
|
Compuped (Version 4) |
File extension is ".CRC". The data which
can be extracted is name, sire, dam and registration,
sex, date of birth, colour, title, user defined fields 1, 2 and 3. Also extracts
the details of owners from the .COW file. |
|
GenTree export file |
File extension is ".TXT". The file is comma separated
values with values in double quotes. The data which
can be extracted is name, sire, dam and registration,
all fields, *except* medical record, notes, activity date. |
|
Pedigree (Ruskat) export file |
This file is always called ASCIIDAT.LST. It is a fixed
field length ascii record file. The data which
can be extracted is name, sire, dam and registration,
sex, breed, colour, date of birth. |
|
BellCats |
Stores data in three files, viz CAT.TXT, MAT.TXT and FAT.TXT.
You must have all three files for the conversion to work. The data which can be
extracted is name, sire, dam and registration, sex,
color, date of birth. |
|
Lineage Manager |
File extension is ".DBF" (dBase III). The data which
can be extracted is name, sire, dam and registration,
pre title (show title), post title (obedience), color, date of birth
clearances (certifications). Note this is the older file format.
The newer files use a .DTA file type and these can only be converted by emailing
them to us. |
|
Pedigree V4.0 (Charles Orange) |
File extension is ".DAT". The data which
can be extracted is name, sire, dam and registration,
sex and color. |
|
Anim-all |
File extension is ".MAS". The data which
can be extracted is name, sire, dam and registration,
sex, date of birth, color, owner, breeder. |
|
DogBytes |
File extension is ".TRK". The data which
can be extracted is name, sire, dam and registration,
title, studbook, notes, color, lived. |
|
Pet Record System |
File extension is ".TXT". The data which
can be extracted is name, sire, dam and registration,
title, color, dob, owner. |
|
Pedigree (WareEver) - Canadian |
The file is called DOG.DTA. The data which
can be extracted is name, sire, dam and registration,
title, color, dob, country of origin, breed. |
|
Alfirin |
The file ends in DBW. The data which can be extracted
is name, sire, dam, DOB, sex, titles, color (though this depends on exactly how
the data was exported). The Alfirin viewer *assumes* that the fields in the DBW
file are:
AnimalID|Name|DOB|SireID|DamID|Photo/URL|Title|Reg No.|Color|Sex
(fields after sex are ignored). |
|
Alfirin Re-Indexer |
This is *not* an importer. It is a converter which will
read you Alfirin DBW file and reindex the file by adding four random alphabetic
characters to the end of every index, e.g. and index like 123 becomes 123GHOR. The
reindexer also regenerates the BRW, BXW and IXW files. The files it produces are
the same name as the source except thet have "2" appended to the name, hence "BorderCollies.DBW"
gets reindexed to "BorderCollies2.DBW".
The effect of reindexing is that it becomes very difficult
to guess valid indexes. In fact it would require roughly 500,000 guesses to get
just one correct index. This makes data mining more difficult and also make it easier
to implement schemes that limit the number of requests per IP address or session.
|
|
Speedy Pedigree (InTouch) |
Files end in MDB. The data which can be extracted is name,
sire, dam, DOB, sex, titles, color, reg no, breed . |
|
The Breeders Data Manager (TBDM) |
Files end in MDB. The data which can be extracted is name,
sire, dam, DOB, sex, titles, color, reg no . |
|
PedigreePoint |
Files end in TXT. Some PedPoint exports end in .GZ - these
need to be manually unzipped into TXT files using Gzip.exe which is available from
www.gzip.org . Use the file open dialog to select
all the files in the one export - note PedPoint splits the export into individual
files containing about 10,000 records each. |
|
After the file has been converted you will see the pedigree
data which has been converted in a spreadsheet style format
with one line per record and one column per field. This is the same format as the
Breed Mate database view.
The next step is to use the "File Save As..." command
to save the file as a Breed Mate
file or use the Export CSV... command to save the converted data as a comma separated
value
file which is easily imported into most other programs including spreadsheets.
If saving as a Breed Mate file, always save the file with
a ".BMX" extension , eg a German Shepherd file would be saved as "GERMAN.BMX".
Other Commands
1. Create Sex - sometimes it is difficult to extract
the sex information from certain
file formats. In these cases you can use the Create Sex command. It will look up
every
name and check whether it was used as a sire or dam and set the sex field for that
entry
appropriately.
2. View Options - you can set two parameters, viz:
a. dd/mm or mm/dd date format - use this to set
whether the dates are
converted as day/month or month/day. Note this options only work with certain file
formats which store the date in
binary format. Those formats which store the date as plain text will not be
subject to this option.
b. Change Case - use this to enable or disable
conversion of names to
title case, ie first letter capitals - this is the most readable form for names.
If this option is not selected then the
names will be simply copied as is.
3. Export/Import XML - this enables exchange of
data with other OPSX compliant pedigree software.
4. Export CSV - exports in BreedMate CSV format
which is suitable for importation into Excel or Access.
